[mutual] aid the forest

Elon University Faculty Biennial February 2024

Installation with spoken word and sound healing single channel video the Atlanta forests; current event headlines wrapped in holographic film; 3 metallic tree stumps; 61 biodegradable “eco glitter” turtle tracks; a large pile of Georgia dirt; manipulated hog wire, construction fencing, police, caution and danger tape, magnolia leaves, and zip ties.

[mutual] aid the forest interrogates the #stopcopcity movement through multimedia explorations of a Georgia RICO indictment laying out the definitions of terms such as “mutual aid” and “anarchy” and “direct action.” The document charges 61 individuals with crimes such as domestic terrorism for activities such as attending a concert, handing out flyers with public record information and speaking out against the  militarized national police training center under construction on the site of a former plantation, forced labor prison and toxic waste dump in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Atlanta once inhabited by the Muscogee Creek tribe. The area, known as the Weelaunee Forest, is also a critical concern for climate and other environmental issues. The indictment represents a dramatic departure in standard criminal procedure and a torpefying escalation of charges for protestors and those who support them with jail letters, food, housing and other support who now face life in prison.
